Batteries:
1) How to ensure excellent maintenance of a battery?
If your vehicle remains stationary for more than 15 consecutive days, as the battery discharges on average 0.5-1% each day, which increases as the temperature of the environment in which the battery is located increases, we recommend that you consider purchasing a BC Battery Controller battery charger: an automatic circuit continuously reads the charging parameters, supplying the current necessary to always keep it in optimal conditions.
2) Why do battery problems occur more often during the winter?
Batteries, although they are subject to greater self-discharge in summer or in any case in the presence of a high external temperature, are subjected to much more onerous operating conditions during the winter: the viscosity of the engine oil, for example, increases and thus requires a greater battery boost to start the vehicle; furthermore, for vehicles used seasonally, the batteries remain stationary and connected to the electrical system to ensure the current to the various electronic systems installed (anti-theft devices, immobilizers, etc.): the battery, in addition to self-discharge due to physical reasons, is thus subjected to a slow but constant discharge. These are the worst conditions because a deep and often lethal discharge occurs. Sealed batteries and in particular gel batteries are the most delicate: deep discharge phenomena and relative sulphation often make them irrecoverable.
3) What is sulfation?
Sulfation is a physical phenomenon that consists in the formation of lead sulphate crystals inside the battery. It is one of the main causes of battery replacement. The phenomenon can be generated in two ways:
1 - When the battery is subjected to a deep discharge, the concentration of crystals increases and by binding together they form a thickness on the battery plates.
2 - When the battery plates, due to the low level of electrolyte, are exposed to air they generate oxidation phenomena and subsequent sulphation. Sulphation significantly reduces the useful life of the battery due to the reduction of the useful surface area on the cells to generate electrolysis and the consequent supply of current. The BC Battery Controller battery chargers, by always maintaining the battery at an ideal charge level, between 95-100%, prevent sulphation and in the presence of very low batteries reduce the concentration of lead sulphates, bringing the battery back to a useful charge level for normal operation.
4) Can I leave the battery connection cable with eyelets always installed on board the vehicle?
In each BC Battery Controller package, you will find a connection cable that we have specifically designed so that it can always remain installed on board your vehicle in complete safety. Considering that the battery, especially on motorcycles but also on cars, is often mounted in increasingly extreme and difficult to reach positions, the cable serves to make the connection more convenient and accessible. On motorcycles, for example, the wiring can be installed so that the connection connector to your BC Battery Controller is located directly under the saddle. You will therefore have to install the wiring only once and always leave it connected to the vehicle: keeping the battery in perfect working order will become a convenient habit. You can rest assured: the wiring that remains connected to the battery (and therefore to the vehicle) is made using rubber and plastic suitable for resisting oils, atmospheric agents and strong temperature fluctuations; it is practically indestructible. Furthermore, the protection fuse serves to isolate the battery as soon as any reason for a short circuit occurs. In short, it is a useful, convenient product but above all designed to be safe in all conditions of use.
5) What can I do if I have several batteries to charge?
If you have more than one motorcycle (or more than one car, etc.) to keep charged, we have decided to provide as an accessory, to be purchased in addition to the battery charger, a standard battery connection cable (Code: STD2V). In this way you can install the wiring on all vehicles, always leaving it on board the vehicle. With a constant rotation of the battery charger you will be able to ensure satisfactory maintenance of all your batteries. And if that were not enough, the BC range includes the professional multiple battery charger BC Pro 4S, to charge, recover and maintain up to 4 motorcycle batteries at the same time!
6) Can I charge 6 Volt and 24 Volt batteries?
Yes, the BC battery charger range also includes products for 6V and 24V batteries. For 6 Volt batteries, you need to purchase the BC K900 product, which charges and maintains the charge of all 6V and 12V batteries. For 24 Volt batteries, the BC Plus 4000 - 24V model is available.
Battery Chargers and Maintainers:
1) Can I leave the BC Battery Controller charger always connected to the battery?
Yes, you can forget about the battery charger always connected even for months, because it will never overload your battery: an automatic circuit guarantees the extreme quality of the voltage and charging current. It will never be necessary to remove the caps from the battery or disconnect the battery from the vehicle. The on-board electronics of your vehicle, even the most sophisticated, will never be damaged by the interaction with BC Battery Controller. This is the advantage of intelligent battery chargers compared to traditional ones, which must be disconnected from the vehicle because they risk damaging the installed electronic devices and, if not disconnected within a short time, they overcharge the battery, generating dangerous explosive gases and reducing the electrolytic power of the battery. The BC battery charger is safe, because it is protected from short circuits and overheating: if the internal temperature of BC Battery Controller becomes excessive, the electronic circuit will temporarily limit the current supplied, until normal operating conditions are restored.
2) Is BC Battery Controller compatible with the 12V socket of BMW motorcycles?
Of course! All motorcycles, including BMW motorcycles, are fitted with traditional, MF, AGM or Gel batteries: BC Battery Controller battery chargers are universal, designed to ideally charge and maintain all types of batteries on the market. Most motorcycles produced in Germany - especially BMW motorcycles - are fitted with a 12V socket compliant with the DIN 4165 standard (recognisable by the 12 mm diameter compared to the 18 mm diameter of traditional cigarette lighter sockets). For all BMW motorcycles with a CAN-Bus system, we recommend the BC K900 model, the only one compatible with the 12V socket installed as standard on the motorcycle. All other BC motorcycle battery charger models can be used to charge and maintain BMW motorcycle batteries, by connecting the battery charger directly to the battery via the wiring with eyelets (code STD2V) or the traditional terminals / crocodile clips (code 30AMPPZ), which you will always find in the package.
3) Isn't a 0.9A max current charger too small for a 100/120Ah car battery?
You are the one who must evaluate your needs: if you have a 100 Ah battery and you are in a hurry to charge the battery quickly, you will certainly have to go for the most powerful battery chargers, BC 3500 EVO and BC 9000 EVO. If, however, you already have a battery charger for your motorcycle and you want to make a constant maintenance program for a battery with a capacity of around 80/100 Ah, the product you already have may be sufficient: the only difference you will find compared to smaller batteries will be the time needed to reach the maintenance cycle, for the rest nothing will change.
Information:
1) Can I use my vehicle's cigarette lighter socket to charge the battery?
In addition to cars and campers, motorcycles and other vehicles are increasingly being equipped with traditional cigarette lighter sockets. Did you know that you can charge the battery directly using the cigarette lighter socket? It's nothing revolutionary, but the experience gained over the years has shown us that very few people know this aspect: check whether the cigarette lighter socket of your vehicle is locked or not (if the socket works when the vehicle is off, it means that it is not locked). In this case, all you have to do is purchase the accessory Cod. ACC612V and connect your BC Battery Controller directly to the cigarette lighter socket. You will no longer have to use clamps or get your hands dirty to install the connection cable supplied with your BC Battery Controller to always keep your battery in perfect working order!
2) What happens if I reverse the battery poles while installing the cable?
All products in the BC range are protected against permanent and continuous inversion of the battery poles. Therefore, in the event of accidental inversion of the battery eyelets, the battery charger diagnostics will signal the presence of this abnormal condition without any damage to the power supply electronics.
3) What happens if the negative and positive poles of the battery cable touch each other (short circuit)?
All products in the BC Battery Controller range are protected against permanent and continuous short circuits. Therefore, in the event of accidental contact of the eyelets connected to the battery, the protection fuse intervenes, isolating the battery and preventing the production of dangerous sparks. Furthermore, the battery charger diagnostics will signal the presence of this abnormal condition.
